Chapter Ten

It had been a hell of a day, a runaway calf, a broken fence, and the sun so hot, Esteban wanted to jump face first into the next water bucket he saw. He was hoping that June would join him tonight at the oasis for a little lovemaking under the stars, but she said she had something going on and would let him know. He wondered if she was blowing him off, if somehow, he had disappointed her last week. Esteban couldn’t see how. They had made love four times, falling asleep in each other’s arms before waking up and doing it again.

He had been damn useless the next day in the saddle, but for some reason, Nate had gone easy on him. He was pretty sure Janice had told Nate where Esteban had spent the night, and with whom, but Nate didn’t mention it to him. Esteban made sure to work extra hard for the rest of the week.

The team had moved the herd to a new pasture today and because of that, they were going to work locally tomorrow, which put everyone in a good mood. It wasn’t as exciting as riding out with the cows, but Esteban enjoyed maintaining the ranch area as a change of pace. He’d enjoy it a lot more when they hired more ranch hands.

Luis’s first week was going well. He was fitting in quickly and learning the ropes without too much supervision. But Luis and their mother kept pressuring Esteban to get Sam on the payroll as well. She had already called him twice today. He hadn’t bothered calling her back. Beatriz even texted that he needed to get Sam a job ASAP. They had moved her and Dina in last Saturday, without a problem. Cliff had had to spend the weekend in jail and didn’t get out until Monday, which was glorious. He was also not happy to find his soon-to-be ex-wife packed and moved out with their daughter, but at least he was keeping things civil.

Esteban didn’t bother trying to drum up conversation with Nate about the job on the ride back from the pasture. Nate would let him know when he had the green light from Emily. Sam and his family would just have to be patient.

“We’re going to need to do some digging tomorrow for the new fences,” Nate said when they reached the ranch.

Esteban nodded. He was dying to ask Nate what he knew about his fight with Cliff or his night with June, but he hadn’t gotten to be assistant foreman by ticking off his boss. Nate would mention it, if he thought it was relevant.

As Esteban took his and Nate’s horse back to the stable to put them away for the night, his stomach grumbled. He could smell the barbecue chicken that was tonight’s dinner, and couldn’t wait to dig in. Lunch had been six long hours ago.

Sarah Sullivan put out a good spread. She and her husband, Frank, came out every day and set up the chow wagon.
